Facing the Struggles You Can't Skip

Ever wonder why we keep repeating the same yoga poses? Some might say, 'Can do, great! Cannot do—move on, no need to be so rigid, right?'

But let’s put it into perspective. If you cannot do something, does that mean you should skip it entirely? Look for something easier, more fun, or something you know you can already do?

Now, think about this in life. When something challenges us, someone triggers us, or life throws us completely out of our routine, what do we usually do? Run? Hide? Escape? Ignore it? Get frustrated? Blame the situation or others?

Sure, these might feel like “solutions” in the moment, but they’re temporary at best. Life has this funny way of circling back—throwing the same challenge at us again and again until we face it.

Until we deal with it, it’s not going away.

This is one of the reasons why Ashtanga Mysore practice is different from other yoga styles. In this practice, when you struggle with a posture, there’s no escaping it. You can’t skip it or avoid it and move on to the next pose. You can’t say, “Eh, teacher, I don’t like this one. Can give me another pose?” It doesn’t work that way. The practice itself teaches you to face your struggles, head-on.

Here's another perspective - When life throws a curve ball at you, do you say, "I don't want this to happen, take it back?" We all know that, there's no such thing.

Sometimes, you might stay stuck on a single pose for months—or even years. Why? Maybe your body still require some time to get stronger/flexible. Maybe it’s stubbornness or an unwillingness to change. Maybe you can’t let go of control or putting the blame on everyone and everything else. Most of the time, though, it’s tied to your mental and emotional state.

That pose is revealing something deeper within you that needs your attention.

So the next time you feel like giving up, or you find repetition boring, take a moment.

Look within.

Ask yourself—what is this teaching me?

Because often, the very thing you want to run from is exactly where you need to grow.
